Pocket Cinema - Large Group Classes
Beginners Mobile Film Training
Service Description
This collaborative workshop turns any space into a living film studio—with phones as our cameras and participants as both crew and storytellers. Inspired by participatory filmmaking practices—like when entering a new community abroad and engaging locals in the storytelling process—this session simulates collective creation, showing how film can become a tool for dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy. Working with available props, DIY hacks, and prompts designed to spark imagination, participants will rotate through every aspect of filmmaking: pre-production, directing, camera work, sound, and performance. Breakout groups will form “departments” based on personal interests—production design, camera, sound, editing—while ensuring everyone has a chance to experience multiple roles. For those with editing skills, the post-production team will play a guiding role, directing peers to capture specific shots or sequences to help weave together the collective stories. By the end of the workshop, participants will have shot, recorded, and assembled a short film. The finished work will later be screened and find a permanent home on our streaming platform/website. Who it’s for: Emerging filmmakers, artists, activists, or anyone ready to tell powerful stories with minimal gear. No prior experience required. What You’ll Gain: – Experience simulating participatory filmmaking methods – Hands-on practice in every stage of production – Mobile filming and sound techniques using only a phone – Creative approaches with props and DIY hacks – Collaborative editing and storytelling strategies – A finished film created collectively during the workshop Format: Half-day or full-day. Project-based, participatory, and highly interactive. Participants will leave with direct experience of collective filmmaking and the knowledge to apply these methods in their own communities.
